Washington, DC—On Thursday, the frontline nurses and healthcare professionals of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East joined with hundreds across the country to endorse LaToia Jones for Democratic National Committee Vice Chair. Their endorsement along with others throughout labor and community groups makes it clear that Jones is the progressive choice for Vice Chair of the DNC.

“Our support of LaToia Jones comes at a time when the DNC is facing internal divisions, and the entire labor movement is facing an existential threat from President Trump and far-right anti-labor extremists,” said 1199SEIU President George Gresham. “The future of our party and this country depends on leadership and vision like that of LaToia’s. The Democratic party must lead with bold proposals that vastly improve the lives of working people and the strength of unions. She possesses the imagination and moxie required to re-engage the party faithful and put us on a path to victory in the South and throughout the country—that is why we are so happy to endorse her campaign.”

Georgia-raised and Chicago-born, LaToia A. Jones is a Democrat, organizer, community leader, activist and strategist. Her purpose and drive have always been to be the most effective public servant possible. In most cases, this meant behind-the-scenes roles and learning from impactful servant leaders. She was the first African-American female executive director of the College Democrats of America and currently serves as Associate of Human and Civil Rights at the American Federation of Teachers.

“Uplifting all working people and engaging black, brown, southern, rural and youth voters is a winning strategy to get our party back on track. And with the support of 1199SEIU, I know I can assist our party in getting it done,” said LaToia Jones. “Now more than ever, our party needs to see the labor movement as a partner in our struggle to level the playing field for working families and defeat far-right policies currently being pushed by Trump and his allies.”

1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing healthcare union in America. They represent over 400,000 nurses and caregivers throughout Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Florida. Their mission is to win quality healthcare and good jobs for all.
